About
I have been making work about transient structures.
These structures often find themselves as base components in our individual and collective experience. A glimpse of a jet passing overhead, the shuffling through voice messages in between an afternoons errands, the momentary action while purchasing a newspaper renders countless glimpses into remote experiences and places. The overabundance of events, histories and constructed environments has brought with it an array of spaces that individuals inhabit, contribute to and navigate. A growing number of these spaces are not connected to history or identity, making the production of personal meaning difficult for inhabitants. Defacing that landscape’s landmarks and fixtures offer alternatives.
Mining systematic imagery such as technical illustration, security patterns from envelopes and architectural diagrams, I reconfigure these depictions of actual and invented space into slippery windows for a viewer to contemplate. My work often extends beyond the painted surfaces, expanding and informing the contexts they inhabit. Having an undergraduate degree in media studies I also am informed by film, video and sound employing them to articulate concepts and explore process. I view collaboration as a necessary part of my personal growth and remaining flexible. My current studio is housed in the classroom of St. Michael’s, a former preparatory school in Braddock PA. It is currently an art space called Unsmoke Systems.
