EHS Alumni Offers Help to East High Teachers

In the fall of 2008,, on a teacher in service day, Alumni officers presented a proposal to the East High Faculty. What was proposed was for the teachers to come up with ideas that would enhance their lessons to East High students. Basically, the EHS Alumni said come up with new or innovative ways to present your lessons or perhaps to enhance and enrich your lessons and the Alumni Assoc. will pick up the bill! The faculty came up with some terrific ideas and the race was on. Would they run out of ideas before we ran out of money? Here are some of the things that your Alumni Assoc. did:

The counselors wanted to run a “Student of the Week” program and award prizes for the students selected each week. The Alumni put up the money and East has a new winner every week. ($300.00)

The library needed a new laminating machine the kids could use for their projects. Thanks to the Alumni for “covering” their need. ($684.00)

The English department put together three field trips: Cleveland Museum of Art, Monet in Normandy, The Maltz Holocaust Museum, and the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Princess Di exhibit. Thanks to the Alumni again, the kids got to see and experience different cultures and learn to understand their significance. ($800.00)

The computer in the music department went down and couldn’t be fixed. Alumni to the rescue, new computer purchased for the music department in February. ($760.00)

National Honor Society got a boost from the Alumni to fund their activities as well as continuing the Three Point O Club. ($600.00)

One of the computers in the reading program went dead but the Alumni Assoc. was able to give them a charge by supplying them with a new power system for their computer. ($183.00)

Thousands of dollars were funneled through the Alumni Association to benefit the JR. ROTC program under George Anger, ‘65 EHS Alumni. ($2879.00)

Student Council got some help on their canned food drive. ($100.00)

“The Minaret” received some help with their publication too. ($100.00)

Join Us Today !

We invite you to join hundreds of other East High Alumni in supporting the programs at dear old East High. The Alumni financially support East High School activities, sports and educational programs as well as provide college scholarships to graduating students. All of this is possible only as a result of your participation. There are currently two memberships available: our annual membership which costs $20.00/year or our Charter membership which costs $100.00/10 years ( a 50% savings). Both memberships will entitle you to receive a membership card, an Alumni Assoc. lapel pin and of course all membership costs are tax deductible as we are a registered 501 (c) (3). Further, you should know that all monies collected go to supporting the kids at East. The officers and staff of the Alumni Assoc. are not paid employees, but rather volunteers just trying to do the right thing by giving back some of what they got from their East High Experience.

East High Alumni Annual Benefit Reverse Raffle

It’s raffle trime again! Every year, in February, the Alumni Assoc. sponsors a reverse raffle for the benefit of East High programs and scholarships. This year the date has been set on February 11. The reverse raffle will be at Guy’s Party Center on Waterloo Rd. Festivities kick off at 6:00PM when we start the open bar (top shelf stuff). Appetizers come out at 6:30, the sit down steak, chicken or vegetarian dinner will be served at 7:30. We will have a number of give aways, raffles, side boards and new this year, side board showdown, a little card game. The food is always great, the bar is top notch, and the action is fast and furious. Come and join us for a great evening of good food, drinks, fellowship and a chance to win lots of money. All proceeds go directly to funding all kinds of great things for East High kids. This event has sold out for the past 25 years, don’t wait, call and order your tickets right away. Hope to see you there with all of your old high school friends.

Cancun Raffle : Winners!

At the Night at the Races, the winner of the Cancun Raffle was drawn. The winning ticket belonged to Betty Fallick, a 1965 EHS graduate. Now when she graduated in 1965, her name was Betty Calhoun. Betty and her husband will be going to Cancun in March of 2010. What a nice time to get away from the winter blahs and relax on the warm, white sands of the Caribbean. They will be staying at the Westin Regina, one of the nicest luxury condos on the beach. One week at this resort costs $3000.00, add another $900.00 in airfare and this prize has a total value of almost $4000.00. Not a bad return on a $5.00 ticket, eh?
How can we do that? It’s East High magic. Another 1965 EHS graduate, Mike Esakov, and his wife Jan, were kind enough to donate their week at this resort to the Alumni Assoc. so that we could raffle it off and raise money for dear old East High. Its the magic that comes from being a part of the “East High Experience.” I can’t explain it, but I can tell you that it is there in many EHS graduates. They loved their high school and now that they are in a position to help, they do. The East High Alumni Association is a vehicle through which Alumni contribute to the future. The Association supports the students and teachers at East in a myriad of ways including scholarships, program help, athletics etc. Its mission is to enrich the student experience at East High in any way that they can.
So who are the winners? Certainly the Fallicks, certainly the kids at East who will benefit from the proceeds of the raffle, and ultimately, all of us benefit in some way by providing a helping hand to the kids that represent the future of our community, our country, our world.

East High Night at the Races is HUGE success

The Night at the Races was a huge success on two levels. First, it gave all present an opportunity to get together and share the fellowship of the East High faithful. It was really a good time. There were about 150-160 people, many alumni as well as friends of East. We ate together, drank together, shared stories, and got to see many people we don’t get to see often enough. Then came the excitement of the races finding us all calling for our horses on the home stretch. Some people won a lot of money, others helped them do that. It was a fun night.
The other part of the success was that we raised some much needed money for the cash-strapped athletic department. We need to give RON LINGER a high five for organizing, planning and carrying off such a fun evening. While Ron orchestrated the night, he was not alone in the work. His cadre of volunteers made the night go smoothly. Thanks to all of you.

The 2009 Luther Smith Hall of Fame Inductions

The Akron East High Alumni Association is honored to present the Class of 2009 inductees to the Luther D. Smith East High School Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame Inductees are selected for outstanding achievement in their individual professions and/or for outstanding efforts and contributions in areas of community service, charitable works and serving the less fortunate.

Membership Lapel Pins

At long last the Official Akron East High School Alumni Association lapel pins will be mailed to members of record. After much negotiation and revision the lapel pins are now in and waiting to be mailed to the Alumni Association members. Look for these beautiful pins to arrive soon in the mail.

Update on Alumni Contributions

The Alumni Association has been very busy this year helping East High School students.

1. In January and February we helped to send JR ROTC students to a national marksmanship contest in Georgia. We paid for a teacher and his students to fly down to the contest, stay at a hotel while there and rent a van. We also provided the students with rifle bags and T shirts for the trip. Further, we helped to provide support to our JR ROTC students here in Akron for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. And lastly we helped support our JR ROTC students in Drill Meets in Beaver Valley Pennsylvania and also a meet at Garfield. All of this was done as a result of an Alumni gift to the East High JR ROTC program. Thank you Alumni!

2. The Auto Mechanics class was just recently helped by the Alumni Association to get some auto parts and a tire to complete their senior project car for the year. The car, a black 320 i will be auctioned off at the Akron Public Schools auction this summer and the money will come back to the auto mechanics lab here at East for their use next year. All done as a result of your generosity Alumni. Thanks!

3. Boys Baseball got new team socks,hats,gloves etc. as a result of you donations Alumni. Thanks!

4. Boys Basketball will be able to take part in a summer league because the Alumni Association was there for them. Thanks Alumni!

4. The East High Cheerleaders have to dig deep into their own pockets each year for their uniforms, warm ups etc. This year, the Alumni Association stepped up and helped them out thanks to your donations and memberships. Thanks, Alumni.

5. This year some DECA students got to attend a nation contest because the Alumni Association was able to buy an airline ticket to help them on their way. They were flying high. Thanks

6. Girl’s softball got into the swing with new bats purchased by the alumni Association. They were a big hit! Thanks Alumni!

7.The Alumni Association contributed money to the National Honor Society so that they could continue their work here at East. Smart move Alumni!

8.The senior class got to party all night as a result of a gift from the Alumni Association to help them rent the Natatorium in the Falls. A good time was had by all at the senior class party. Thanks Alumni.

9. The Spanish club needed some help getting a rather expensive cartridge for their Spanish printer. Alumni to the rescue.. Gracias Alumni!

10. The Minaret got a new advertiser this year to help defray the cost of publishing the Yearbook. Look for our add in the Minaret!

All tolled, the Alumni Association was able to help the kids and support the programs at East High this year to the tune of about $11,000.00 dollars. This does not include scholarships that will be talked about in the next posting. All of this can be done as a result of your giving. THANKS ALUMNI !!!
